What’s behind the rise in serious injuries on New York City’s streets?
NYC's streets have seen a 10% rise in serious injuries from vehicle crashes between 2022-2024, despite decade-long Vision Zero safety reforms that reduced pedestrian deaths by 45%. Faculty Fellow Marcel Moran explains: "We had this huge destabilization event, in terms of transportation behavior, with Covid. But we're now fully on the other side of that." Moran argues that reducing the "denominator" of driving volume is crucial, as increased post-pandemic car usage directly correlates with injury rates in vulnerable communities
